Pay your Vows
Ps.66:13-14
David made sure to pay his vows, which his lips had uttered and his mouth had spoken. As we will see in this lesson vows are promises. Pay your vows, make good on every promise that comes out of your mouth. God commands it. So we need to be very careful with the promises we make. He is also not slack concerning His promise, [2 Pet.3:9]. Our salvation is conditioned on a promise of God. How good is your salvation if God is not trustworthy? The promises we make and our consistency in keeping them is a reflection of our trustworthiness. Pay your vows.
Man to God
- [Num.30:2] If you vow a vow unto the Lord, you better do it, pay your vows.
- [Ecc.5:1-5] Better not to vow, than to vow and not pay
- [Prov.20:25] Don’t be hasty, think first.
- [Jonah 2:9] He made a vow to God and after some persuasion decided to pay up
Man to Man
- [Prov.22:7] You are servant to the lender, especially bad if they are a friend or relative.
- [Matt.6:24] You can’t serve two masters
- [Rom.13:6-8] We are to owe no man anything, which also means paying on time.
- [Mk.12:13-17] Pay your taxes. [Rom.13:1-7] Be subject to the higher powers. Pay your vows.
- [Prov.11:15] Never co-sign a note for someone else, never.
Man to Family
- [Matt.19:3-6] Keep your wedding vows, until death do you part. Everyone wants their spouse to trust them, so never break a promise to them; pay your vows.
- [Eph.6:4] “…provoke not your children to wrath” Many children have a memory of childhood in which a parent did not keep a promise made to them, and many become bitter.
- [1Cor.11:3] Men you are the “head” of your family, and you represent Jesus Christ. How are your wife and children ever going to trust God, if they can’t trust you?
