The Greatest Friend You Could Have
(Hebrews 2:9-18)
In this passage we see Jesus Christ and his purpose as the High Priest. In this sermon we will focus on the word “succour” and how the definition of this word makes Jesus Christ the greatest friend we could have.
Soccour – Literally to run to, or support: hence to help or relieve in difficulty want or distress; to assist and deliver from suffering. [American Dictionary of the English Language, Noah Webster, 1828]
Why is Jesus able to soccour?
1) Because he became flesh and blood (Hebrews 2:14-17)
- Even though he was flesh and blood, he had no sin. But as a man he could experience life as a man.
2) He was tempted in all points like us yet without sin (Hebrews 2:18)
- Even though he could have sinned he faced the temptation and did not yield (Hebrews 4:14-16)
3) He tasted death for every man (Hebrews 2:9)
- Through death he accomplished for us eternal redemption from sin (Hebrews 9:11-15 ; Hebrews 10: 10-14)
What is Jesus able to succour us from?
1) Sin (see above)
2) Whatever problem you are facing (1 Corinthians 10:13)
- Some examples of what Jesus faced (temptation, wrongfully accused, lied about, slandered, hunger, thirst, no home, death of a loved one, arrested on false charges, betrayed, deserted etc.)
- No matter what you are going through, Jesus knows just how you feel and he succours those who come to him.
How can we get this assistance?
This is where Hebrews 4:14-16 becomes so important. First, we must have Jesus Christ as our High Priest through salvation. Then we must come to the throne of grace to get the help we need. Lastly, we hold fast our profession through the power that Jesus has to soccour us.
