“Yet he hath not root in himself,”
Matt.13:18-23
The Lord speaks of one that “hath no root in himself” in this passage. In this lesson we will look at a few things about roots and what type you should have. Most of the time they, are not seen, they feed the plant, control growth, store food, anchor the plant, can be several times longer than the plant, and plants must produce new ones to grow.
Pecan Trees:
- They only have one , a tap root
- By the time you see a seedling 1” tall, it has a 2’ root
- If you cut off the plant, the root continues to grow (Rom. 11:18), so that it comes back again stronger this time.
- The seed is in the nut shell, not like other tree seeds that hit the ground and promptly grow upward, pecans burrow in and grow down first.
There is much to learn in comparing plant roots to the root we should have. There are also some that we should beware of.
[Matt 13:21] He is “offended” when tribulation or persecution comes.
[Heb.12:15] a root of bitterness
- Causes troubles (you not them)
- Defiles many ( Your troubles cause ones around you to hurt)
[Matt.13:22] He is affected by “the deceitfulness of riches”.
[1 Tim. 6:10] The love of money is the root of all evil.
- Erred from the faith (Your eyes and affections are not on the lord)
- Pierced themselves through with many sorrows (self-inflicted sorrow)
What should your root be like?
Eph 3:17
That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, [John 15:13]
Col 2:7
Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.
Rev 22:16
I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.
